Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about requesting your DD-214.

What is a DD-214?

The DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Armed Forces) is the official document issued upon separation from active duty. It proves military service and is required for most VA and state veterans benefits.

How long does it take to receive my DD-214?

Most requests are processed within 4–10 business days. Expedited processing is available. Pre-1973 records may take longer due to the 1973 fire that destroyed many records.

Who can request a DD-214?

The veteran themselves, next-of-kin for deceased veterans, or an authorized representative with proper documentation may submit a request.

What is the difference between Member 1 and Member 4?

Member 4 includes the character of discharge (Honorable, etc.) and is required for most VA benefits. Member 1 is a redacted version used for public requests and does not include the discharge character.

What if my records were destroyed in the 1973 fire?

Our team is experienced in reconstructing records through alternative sources such as VA files, pay records, unit morning reports, and other federal agency documents. We handle this at no extra charge.

Is my personal information secure?

Yes. All data is encrypted with 256-bit SSL and handled in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974, HIPAA, and federal data security standards. We never share or sell your information.
