The DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Armed Forces) is the official document issued upon separation from active duty. It proves military service and is required for most VA and state veterans benefits.
Most requests are processed within 4–10 business days. Expedited processing is available. Pre-1973 records may take longer due to the 1973 fire that destroyed many records.
The veteran themselves, next-of-kin for deceased veterans, or an authorized representative with proper documentation may submit a request.
Member 4 includes the character of discharge (Honorable, etc.) and is required for most VA benefits. Member 1 is a redacted version used for public requests and does not include the discharge character.
